British Superbikes introduces 'next generation' technical rulings, starts from 2027 season

The British Superbike Championship has announced its new technical regulations, which will come into effect at the start of the 2027 season.

The British Superbike Championship has introduced a set of technical regulations designed to reduce costs for teams, encourage more manufacturers to enter and deliver a better racing product.

The shake-up to the rules will see BSB introduce a Balance of Performance system, something already used in the series' Supersport Next Generation and Sportbike categories. This is largely due to fewer people purchasing new 1000cc superbikes nowadays, meaning supply and demand for the machines has declined.

BSB will introduce a new electronic system that will help make different bikes perform at a similar level, despite differences between manufacturers and generations of motorcycles. Bikes will initially be limited to around 200bhp, with their performance adjusted using data collected during races.

Newer bikes will remain closer to their standard specifications, while older models will be allowed certain upgrades to keep them competitive. The lower performance limit should also help engines last longer and reduce costs for teams.

The new system will also introduce modern rider aids such as traction control, anti-wheelie and launch control, creating a more consistent technical setup across BSB and its support categories.

MSV Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer said: “The objective is to create an environment in which a much broader range of manufacturers can realistically compete, reducing the need for costly development while allowing teams and riders to make the difference.

"Our ambition is for every represented brand to have the potential to challenge towards the front with the right team and rider combination.”

BSB Series Director Stuart Higgs added: “The changes represent a major reset for the championship, using proven technical principles to rebuild the depth of competition across manufacturers, teams and riders.“Not for the first time BSB will take the necessary steps to develop and introduce new sporting and technical solutions.”

BSB has confirmed that it has received positive feedback from existing and prospective teams, while discussions are ongoing with incoming and returning manufacturers, although specific details have yet to be confirmed.
